What the figures are
- Value: the statistical value in euros at the EU border, which includes freight and insurance to the border (CIF).
- Tonnes: net mass, without packaging. The price per kg is the value divided by the net mass, an average across every shipment, grade and contract.
- Country: for imports from outside the EU, the country of origin of the goods, not the country they were shipped from.
- EU country: where the goods were declared for import. Goods that enter through one port and are used elsewhere are counted where they entered.
- Years: the last three calendar years Eurostat has published. The latest year is revised until October of the following year.
What they do not show
Eurostat publishes no company names: these figures cannot tell you who the buyers are. Trade that a member state keeps confidential is left out of the rows for single countries but included in the totals, so the rows can add up to less than the total. Codes of 2, 4 or 6 digits add up all the 8-digit CN codes below them.
Using it as an exporter
- Find the EU countries that already import your product from your country, and how much: those are the markets with buyers used to your origin.
- Compare your price with the average price per kg of competing origins; a much higher or lower figure usually means a different grade or product mix under the same code.
- Check the trend over three years before you plan a trip or a trade fair.
Before you ship, check which EU rules apply to the code: EU rules finder, EUDR code checker, CBAM.
