EPR registration number: format by country, how to get one and how to check it

An EPR registration number shows that a producer is registered for extended producer responsibility in one country. Each country issues its own, for each product stream; there is no EU-wide number. Marketplaces ask for the number of every country you sell to: under the PPWR they must collect it before letting a producer sell packaged products to consumers (Article 45(4)).

Germany: LUCID

Register in LUCID before first making packaging available in Germany (§ 6(1) VerpackDG). Registration is free and online; the number, DE followed by 13 digits, comes with the registration. It covers packaging in Germany only: electrical equipment and batteries go in the EAR register, and LUCID gives no number for packaging sold in other countries. A producer that leaves the market and registers again gets a new number. Anyone can look a producer up in LUCID's public register of producers, updated once a day. Who must register: packaging EPR in Germany.

France: the IDU

ADEME issues an identifiant unique (IDU) when a producer registers in SYDEREP, one per EPR stream: a business with packaging, electrical equipment and textiles holds three. It is required since 1 January 2022 (Article L. 541-10-13 of the Code de l'environnement). Show it in your general terms of sale, or another contractual document given to the buyer, and on your website (Article R. 541-173); a seller must give the buyer the IDU on request (Article L. 541-10-10).

A marketplace counts as the producer for a third-party seller's products unless it holds proof that the seller has an IDU for that stream (Article L. 541-10-9), which is why marketplaces ask for it. ADEME publishes every IDU as open data, updated daily, with a free search by company name, SIRET or number.

Austria: the GLN in EDM

Austria registers producers in EDM, the ministry's electronic data management. The number is a GLN of 13 digits, assigned automatically and free of charge. A distance seller abroad that delivers directly to end consumers in Austria must appoint an authorised representative established in Austria (Verpackungsverordnung 2014, §§ 16a to 16e), by power of attorney in German or English; the representative registers in EDM and takes over the obligations. A GLN the representative already holds for batteries or electrical equipment can be named in the new power of attorney.

Spain: ENV number

Producers register in the packaging section of the Registro de Productores de Producto at MITECO (Real Decreto 1055/2022, Article 15). The number has the form ENV/year/nine digits, for example ENV/2022/000000081 in MITECO's own sample; do not confuse it with the REGAGE file number of the application. It must appear on invoices and other documents that go with packaged products, down to the point of sale for household packaging or the end user for commercial and industrial packaging (Article 15(3)). MITECO notes that if a foreign supplier's invoices lack the number, the importer may have to take on the obligation.

Poland: BDO number

Businesses that place packaging or packaged products on the market register in BDO, the waste database; the marshal of the voivodeship assigns the registration number. It goes on VAT invoices, receipts, sales contracts and reports; documents not tied to the registered activity do not need it. Anyone can look a business up in the public BDO register.

An EPR number is not a VAT ID or an EORI number, and each country and product stream has its own. Which laws need registration and a representative: EPR registration. Formats and rules checked on the official sites below on 19 October 2026.
